Hello I'm Mariah, Host of Empower Brown!
The Big Year
Hi everyone, thanks for listening to my podcast! I am a freshman at Berkeley city college, I am majoring in psychology. This year was a special year for me because I accomplished a lot. I graduated high school a year early, while taking a college course at the same time. It was a pretty stressful summer, but walking across the stage after what felt like forever was great. I began fall semester with a few units under my belt which gave me the push I needed. Being out of high school is very different for me. there is so much freedom i have that i didn't have before. It gave me time to reflect and really decide what i am going to do with my life.
I've always planed to go to college, but when i finally got their it was much harder than i thought. Now that this first semester is over i have a a little over a month off school and I've had time to reflect on life. Right now i am a full time student, about 15 units a semester including intersession class. Full time school + part time job = exhaustion. Its hard to squeeze in fun time, and productivity. I decided it was time to do something meaningful to me. In not shy, i like to express my opinions , but who will listen. Certainly not my family who just thinks I'm a new generation entitled teenager. (Light-bulb) start a podcast! A podcast is a great idea, it has the potential to reach millions of people. Sure, it will take some time, but I'm willing to stay the course.
Why Empower Brown?
I've always wanted to speak up for my community. Frankly, I'm an opinionated person. But, their must be a way to get my options out to the world. I went to 106.1 radio station in San Francisco around may of 2018. A women who regularly featured on the radio said i had a great voice. I had a great voice? Surprisingly , this wasn't the first time i heard it. A podcast is a way for me to 1. test out if my voice is really appealing and 2. share my great insight to the world.
I'm not sure when it started, but i became very aware of how black people were treated around me. I began to recognize prejudiced, racism, and lifestyle differences between Black people (and other minority groups) and white people. I began to ponder why. As the years went on I began to feel passionate about these topics. I learned history and its strong influence on today problems. I find this very interesting. a note about me is that i like to searcher. When i find something interesting I look it up, and i can do this for hours...for fun. Very weird, but hey, that me.
I've always wanted go speak in front of a large crowd full of thousands of people and talk about something. That something is still a bit unknown, but it related to black empowerment. Over the years I've observed people with low confidence about their natural hair. I think natural hair is beautiful, i want to tell people why. I've seen people abuse their children frequently, I want to tell them why they shouldn't, alternatives that get a better result. I've seen the effects of child abuse, verbal and physical and I think this is a big problem in the black community, I want to speak about it. Above all (because it is the umbrella of many problems) I've seen the systematic racism that results in high rate of poverty, crime, and depression among Black people. We need to address this. I need to address this and so much more. Some are opinions, some are facts, and not all will be liked. But who doesn't like a little controversy?
